Regulation saber of the Mounted Grenadiers
Dragoons or Elite Gendarmerie of the Imperial Guard. First Empire.
Sabers from the Versailles Manufactory.
Three-pronged guard forming an openwork shell and decorated with a flaming bomb, made entirely of brass. Brass cap with a short tail, wooden hilt wrapped in calfskin filigree with a braided brass wire, brass ferrule. Blade ending in a crossguard shaped like shields decorated with three palm fronds.
Legible hallmarks: “VERSAILLES”; on the quillon, “JC” in an oval corresponding to J. CAZAMAJOU, inspector from January 1809 to September 1811.
The hollow-edged blade is oxidized; width at the heel 2.8 cm, thickness 1.1 cm, length 95.8 cm.
Hallmarks: “B” of the first-class inspectorJG BICK, from February 1809 to August 1824.
Natural leather scabbard strap.
Wooden scabbard, total length 99 cm, all fittings in brass. The scabbard opening is fitted with a cup-shaped guard. Bracelets with steel rings. The lower section ends in a steel spike. Between the two bands, the scabbard features two slits lined with black waxed leather.
Good condition
The guard and hilt are in very good condition. The blade shows some normal oxidation; it has never been cleaned. The scabbard bears numerous marks from spur strikes inthe lower section and several saber cuts in the upper section, particularly on the pommel, which is slightly deformed, and on the lower ferrule, where the leather and wood have been split and cut; the metal parts were been repaired with rivets and splints roughly welded in place at the time.
In our opinion, this saber is in excellent original condition, as it has never been cleanedor altered since its period repairs. It is a historical artifact that should certainly remain in its current state to preserve its full historical value.
