Display Tray Made Of Precious Wood And Mother-of-pearl. Vietnam Or China, 19th Century.
A hardwood display stand, likely made of rosewood inlaid with mother-of-pearl on all four sides, features depictions of birds, flowers, and flowering shrubs; at the bottom of each panel, bats are inlaid in groups of five. In China, five bats form a pictogram symbolizing “happiness.” This type of tray had several uses; it was used for certain foods, for mail, to present a gift, or to serve tea—the stain on the tray attests to this last function. These trays were produced in large quantities and are common, but this one stands out for its large, bright, and clearly legible motifs, the quality of its wood and craftsmanship, with the panels held together by mortise-and-tenon joints, and above all by the presence of the five bats, a symbol of good fortune. Made in Vietnam or southern China in the late 19th century. In good condition, with an excellent patina on the wood; no repairs; only four small pieces of inlay are missing. If this is a concern, our workshop can replace them with identical pieces.
