"Cast Bronze Vase. Morocco Or Andalusia, 15th Century. Merenid Dynasty. "
This small vase is probably the upper part of a candlestick. We do not have an example of a Merenide candlestick but those from Egypt are cast in 2 parts which fit together, for the purpose of more practical cleaning of the wax. Its square shape and its incised decoration in the style of "lion's teeth" leads us to think that it is a creation of the Maghreb or Andalusia rather than Syro-Egyptian. Kufic characters are chiseled on the 4 faces. Thick and heavy. Height 10cm. On the edge, a lack of casting had been filled by a graft, now disappeared. A hammered bronze bottom was welded to the base for reuse as a vase or small candlestick. It is a small and very rare object which is a strong witness to this period of the history of Spain and Morocco. The tin-soldered base plate is separate. We can easily re-solder it free of charge upon request. We left it that way, thinking it might also be a specialist's choice.
