Cast Bronze Pitcher. China Or Japan. 18th Century Or Earlier.
Heavy, thick-walled, cast bronze pitcher. The surface is entirely carved with complex archaic Chinese decoration. The handle should have been added after casting, but we see no traces of brazing, which would imply that the pitcher was cast with its handle in one piece. Beautiful quality of casting and chasing. More Japanese than Chinese. 18th century or earlier. Good condition, beautiful old patina. Height: 275mm. Note that this is a very rare form probably influenced by Europe. Underneath, a mark, probably of a workshop cast in relief.
