Pompeo Massoni (italian, 1850–1920) A Pair Hunting And Fishing Still Lifes
Artist: Pompeo Massoni
These two still lifes, depicting a hunting and fishing scene, were painted in 1888 by the famous Italian painter Pompeo Massani (1850–Florence–1920).
Massani studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he was a student of Michele Gordigiani, among others. After completing his studies, he traveled extensively, capturing his impressions in his paintings. Beginning in 1879, he also exhibited his works outside of Florence, for example in Rovigo and Genoa. In 1908, Massani became director of his former school.
Massani painted figures, genre scenes, still lifes, and portraits. His “skillful evocation of emotions and meticulous depiction of the individual,” which “produce warm and humorous images,” are particularly noteworthy. His paintings, often small in size, depict elderly men enjoying life’s simple pleasures, though he did not use professional models.
