Aubusson Tapestry: *the Charenton Mill*, After A Work By J-b-m Huet

This French tapestry, from the second half of the 18th century, is a beautiful piece.
Made of wool and silk, it depicts the Charenton Mill.
Located on the banks of the Marne River, the village of Charenton had several watermills in the 18th century that supplied Paris with flour.
Many artists, including François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Huet, and Hubert Robert, were captivated by the landscapes of this village and its mills.
On the right, a young man brings the fruits of his fishing to a shepherdess resting with her flock in front of a watermill set amid trees.
The border features bouquets of flowers on a ribbon, with cartouches in the medallions.

Some restoration work, particularly in the border, which has been lined and fitted with a hanging loop.
The subject of this tapestry was very popular in the second half of the 18th century, particularly at the Royal Manufactory of Aubusson.
One example is housed at the Museum of Art and History in Saint-Lô (inv. 1900.09.005).
It is generally agreed that the design was created by Jean-Baptiste-Marie Huet, a student of François Boucher.
This tapestry has been studied by Laurence Fligny’s studio.
It remains on display at my booth at the Le Village des Antiquaires de la Gare gallery in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (Vaucluse).
