Victorian Pivoting Signet Ring Made Of Engraved Ribbon Agate, Set In Gold. Portrait Of Jupiter Ammon.
Seal 16 × 22 mm; H. 28 mm. Pb 8.85 g.
Probably English, 19th century
Victorian swivel seal made of banded agate engraved in intaglio, mounted in a swiveling gold setting with a suspension ring. The bezel swings within its setting to display alternately the stone and the engraving—a feature typical of 19th-century pocket seals.
The intaglio depicts a portrait of Jupiter Ammon facing left, his bearded head crowned with ram’s horns curled at the temples—a hallmark of the deity. The deep engraving makes use of the white and brown veins of the ribbon agate: the light band sets the face off against the dark background, an effect sought after by Victorian engravers. The rendering of the hair and beard, in lively, dynamic strands, draws inspiration from ancient models that the neoclassical taste had brought back into favor.
