Famous “PERSAN” set, made of pewter with Orientalist decoration, consisting of a JUG and its DISPLAY STAND. The pitcher, with a flattened baluster shape and a curved spout connected to the body by a beaded arm, is adorned with bas-relief designs of basketwork and fleurons. The handle attachments feature interlacing leafy branches. It rests on its circular stand with a central indentation, adorned with flowers, rows of beads, and openwork.
Hallmarks:
- on the pitcher: Clear hallmark and small “gallows” mark.
- on the stand: Clear hallmark and large “gallows” mark.
Extremely rare autograph signature by the artist on the stand
Height of the ewer: 26.7 cm.
Diameter of the display stand: 28 cm.

Contemporary edition by the artist. This is one of his major works, created in 1887
Condition: The decoration remains very fresh, and its finesse is exceptional. The two-tone wickerwork on the handle is original; there is some reinforcement on the lid tab, as well as a repair on the base of the pitcher. The edge of the display stand shows localized reinforcement and a small chip.

Generally speaking, any other marks featuring a crowned rose and various other inscriptions indicate a posthumous edition from 1923 by the firm GRAS and ETIENNE, which used Brateau’s molds until the 1960s. 
It is worth noting the play on sound intended by the artist between the depiction of his “gallows” countermark and his initials J.B.
