"bull" Table Clock, Louis XV Period, Chiseled Bronze With Patina And Gilding

This table clock stands out for its unique construction, combining a Louis XV-era case with a Louis XIV-era “onion” movement.

The gilded bronze base depicts an uneven ground from which several large gilded flowers and a patinated bronze snail emerge. The bull, crafted from patinated bronze, strikes a powerful and dynamic pose. Its supple and lifelike modeling is characteristic of the naturalistic style of the Louis XV era.

The asymmetrical composition of the foliage harmoniously frames the clock’s dial. 
The Louis XIV “onion” is a large, round, thick, and domed pocket watch invented in France in the late 17th century (around 1675–1690).
Here, the circular white enamel dial, featuring Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, offers excellent readability. It is set within a gilded bronze frame. The case back, finely decorated with engraved motifs, depicts a romantic scene.

The piece as a whole is characteristic of the Rocaille style.
