18th Century Mantel Clock

Royal Antique is proud to present this striking mantel clock, a superb example of the Empire style, a period characterized by its grandeur and inspiration drawn from classical antiquity. This timepiece demonstrates a masterful combination of materials and exceptional craftsmanship, resulting in a piece that is both visually stunning and aesthetically versatile.

Design and Materials:

  • Mixed and Contrasting Materials: The clock features a striking combination of noble materials, including luminous white marble, contrasting deep black marble elements, and richly decorated gilt bronze. This interplay of colors and textures is typical of the opulence of the Empire.

  • Classical Portico Form: The clock adopts the classical architectural form of a portico, with a central circular clock face suspended between two imposing columns. These columns are elegantly crafted from black marble and are adorned with gilt bronze floral garlands, emphasizing the verticality and refinement of the composition.

  • Multi-Tiered Base: The clock rests on a multi-tiered base, predominantly of white marble, providing a luxurious and elegant foundation. The base is also enhanced with finely chased gilt bronze motifs.

  • Dial and Surround: The white enamel dial is signed "Seigneur à Paris", attesting to its quality Parisian origin. It displays Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes (at five-minute intervals), and is framed by a decorative gilt bronze wreath surround.

  • Radiant Pendulum: Below the dial, the pendulum, designed as a radiant sunburst, is visible, adding a kinetic and symbolic element to the ensemble.

  • Decorative Elements: The clock incorporates elaborate decorative elements such as gilt bronze urns topped with stylized floral motifs, placed on the top of each column, adding a touch of opulence and grandeur. A large central gilt bronze urn with a classical design, crowned with an arrangement of gilt bronze flowers, adorns the top of the clock. The generous use of gilt bronze for the mounts and accents further enhances the clock's luxurious appearance, with intricate details of scrolling foliage and classical patterns on the base. Two small gilt bronze birds are perched on the base directly below the pendulum, adding a delicate and charming touch.

Historical Context and Decorative Impact:

This clock is a valuable addition to any discerning collector's home, bringing a touch of historical elegance and sophistication to any interior. It is a superb representation of Empire period art, blending classical ideals with exquisite craftsmanship. It perfectly embodies the Neoclassical taste and monumental grandeur favored under Napoleon I, where the association of precious marbles and gilt bronze was synonymous with luxury and power.
