Royal Antique is proud to present this exquisite Louis XV-style wall clock, dating from the 18th century, which showcases the opulence and craftsmanship synonymous with the Rococo period. This timepiece exhibits a masterful combination of materials and artistry, resulting in a piece that is both visually stunning and a testament to French decorative arts.
Case and Ornamentation:
Black Lacquered Wood Case with Marquetry: The clock case is superbly crafted from black lacquered (or ebonized) wood, providing a rich and dramatic backdrop for the opulent gilt brass and ebony (or tortoiseshell) "Boulle" marquetry inlays, and intricate gilt bronze mounts.
Rococo Motifs and Figures: The clock is adorned with intricate rocaille motifs, delicate floral designs, lush scrollwork, and scrolling acanthus leaves, all meticulously cast and gilded. A finely sculpted gilt bronze figure, likely representing Apollo or a mythological character, is integrated into the lower part of the dial, depicted playing a lyre and accompanied by an animal (possibly a dog or wolf). A small cherub figure crowning the pediment of the clock adds a playful yet sophisticated touch.
Sumptuous Dial and Hands: The dial is elegantly designed with Roman numerals on white enamel cartouches, surrounded by delicate gilt bronze filigree work. The hands are finely crafted, complementing the overall aesthetic of the piece.
Wall Bracket and Movement Details:
Elaborately Decorated Matching Bracket: Resting on an elaborately decorated matching bracket, the clock exemplifies the harmonious blend of artistry and functionality typical of Louis XV design. The bracket echoes the same black lacquered wood, marquetry, and gilt bronze mount motifs, reinforcing the unity of the ensemble.
Eight-Day Movement: The original mechanism, with a hanging pendulum, has been preserved, a testament to the superior craftsmanship of the period. It features an eight-day movement and strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell. The clock works very well and accurately, and it was recently cleaned and serviced by a professional watchmaker. The clock comes complete with its key and bell.
Decorative Impact:
This timepiece is not just a functional object but a stunning decorative piece that embodies the grandeur of 18th-century French decorative arts. It would be a valuable addition to any discerning collector's home, adding a touch of historical elegance and sophistication to any interior.
