18th-century Boulle Marquetry Cartel Clock With Bronze Figures Of Mars, Cupid, And Venus
Small Louis XV table clock / cartel-style clock (serving as a watch stand), featuring Boulle marquetry and gilded bronze ornamentation. The Rocaille-style case is violin-shaped and scalloped, decorated with marquetry featuring copper or brass fillets forming plant arabesques. It houses a cock-shaped movement. Dated to the 18th century.
This table clock is adorned on the front with a mythological scene depicting the Allegory of Time with two inseparable figures: the goddess Venus and Love (Cupid). Above the dial, a female mascaron connects the two floral garlands on either side. And finally, crowning the ensemble, a small statuette of the god Mars (Ares), the quintessential mythological figure of war. He wears a lambrequin cuirass (classical Roman armor) and is depicted in a martial military pose.
This wall clock is in its original condition. It will need to be cleaned. The movement is not working (one hand is missing from the dial). The upper part of the top opens via a hinge, allowing the pocket watch to be inserted for the movement.
Please note: the gilding on the bronze is worn and damaged; there is damage to the marquetry (missing pieces and copper fragments peeling off); and there is wear from age. Please examine the photos closely for details.
