Kayapó Chief's Necklace Made Of Mother-of-pearl

Jean-Pierre Dutilleux Collection

Copy reproduced on page 89 of the book TRIBES – The First People (Éditions Vilo)

Brazilian Amazon, the

Kayapó people. Collected in the field by Jean-Pierre Dutilleux.

DESCRIPTION

An important Kayapó ceremonial necklace consisting of a rigid circular structure formed by a frame of sheathed plant fibers, entirely covered with a regular sequence of rectangular mother-of-pearl plates.

These elements, carefully carved and arranged, create a rhythmic surface with iridescent sheen, contrasting with the dark hue of the inner structure. The upper fastening consists of a dense bundle of long plant fibers forming a spectacular trailing element, characteristic of prestigious adornments.

The lower section is embellished with a finely crafted beaded panel, composed of glass beads in deep blue, red, white, and yellow hues, extended by beaded fringes. This decorative element, both graphic and symbolic, enhances the ceremonial and visual impact of the piece as a whole.
