Painter. Self-taught.

Born in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on October 8, 1877.

Son of Auger ETCHEVERRYGARAY, a tinsmith (from Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle), and Catalina Francisca de

OCHOEGUIA, from Ornieta (Gipuzkoa).

Second-born twin (his twin brother: Joseph, first-born).

Married Catherine Bourthayre in 1945. Died in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on February 8, 1952.

Key facts:

A house painter, musician, and curious mind, he learned to paint under Floutier. Highly energetic, he founded the Estudiantina “L’Oursin” (“The Sea Urchin,” or “Touch it and you’ll get pricked”) in 1904.

He was also instrumental in founding the

Saint-Jean-de-Luz Municipal Band in 1908.

He composed numerous fandangos.
