Devotional pendant or guild badge. Bronze, enamel, etc. Spain, 17th century.
Has some flaws.
Devotional medallion consisting of a frame (with a ring at the top and decorated with alternating “C”s and flowers in colored enamel, with an inner line formed of bands of white enamel in two corners and black enamel in the others) and two sides. The painted scene that usually appears on the front is missing. The reverse features an openwork plaque with two palm fronds framing a chalice from which emerges a Holy Host adorned with a cross, the whole surrounded by plant motifs in colored enamel. Experts note a series of plaques or medallions from religious brotherhoods (oval, rectangular, octagonal, or triangular) produced in Spanish workshops between approximately 1620 and 1640, primarily in Toledo, Salamanca, Córdoba, Seville, etc., but also overseas. Their iconography is generally strongly influenced by the teachings of the Council of Trent.
