Infant Jesus On A Throne. Wood, Terracotta, Fabric. Spanish School, 18th Century And After.

Infant Jesus on a throne. Wood, terracotta, fabric. Spanish school, 18th century and after (chair).
The chair, with its hollow oval back decorated with plant motifs enhanced with gold, features slightly curved armrests ending in prominent scrolls at the front, as well as slightly curved legs that taper to form a more pronounced silhouette at their base. The Infant Jesus, made in polychrome terracotta and attached to the seat by a vertical piece extending from the seat, is seated, hands raised forward, his clothes floating in a breeze that the viewer cannot perceive. The garments are made of glued or plastered polychrome fabric. A small silver metal halo rests on her head. The chair is reminiscent of French Louis XVI-style "fauteuils" in certain details, although it deviates from the norm in other respects, such as the absence of cabriole legs. It is interesting to note that a similar finish on the armrests of this piece is found in the Virgin of Mercy, preserved in the Seville Museum of Fine Arts, attributed to José Montes de Oca and Jerónimo Hernández. A terracotta and wood figure of Saint Joachim with the Virgin Mary Child, signed by Pedro Gaitane (22 cm high, with chair and small stepped base), is preserved with a composition similar to that of this Child. The figure of Jesus bears resemblance to the 18th-century Child Jesus of the Thorn in the Museum of the Holy Angel (Discalced Carmelites, Seville), considered a work by Cristóbal Ramos. Curiously, the Saint Joseph with Child in the Marroco Collection, also by Cristóbal Ramos, has arms turned in an outward spiral, although the backrest is completely different; compare the two Child figures. Another name worth mentioning, due to certain similarities, is that of the sculptor Torcuato Ruiz del Peral. ·
