One side shows Mary Magdalene, as a hermit, with a skull, a cross, and a book; the other features the image of Saint John the Baptist, accompanied by a cross and a lamb, in reference to the Gospel text. This type of piece was highly valued by its owners as devotional items, and could also contain a relic inside. -
