A proportion compass signed "P SEVIN A Paris," that is, Pierre Sevin, who was active in Paris around 1660–1680.
The French proportional compass was the quintessential mathematical and engineering instrument of the 17th and 18th centuries.
This model is an early design, very beautifully engraved by Sevin.
It features only six scales: equal parts, planes, polygons, chords, solids, metals, and a short additional scale bearing only the symbol for Mars—a circle and an arrow—which corresponds to iron, specifically the weight of iron cannonballs.
