Large Painting Of Venice Signed By Bouvard

According to information provided by Delphine Bouvard, the artist’s great-granddaughter, Antoine Bouvard’s real name was actually Eloi Noël Beraud, although he chose to paint under the pseudonyms “Bouvard” and “Marc Aldine.”
Antoine Bouvard (1870–1956) trained as an architect at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became Director of Architectural Services for the Seine and was appointed to oversee the construction of the Stock Exchange (Palais Brogniart) as well as Boulevard Morland.
Bouvard visited Venice in the early 20th century and immediately fell in love with its unique light and scenery, which had captivated so many artists. He returned there frequently throughout his life and specialized in views of La Serenissima, which brought him fame.
He exhibited throughout France and Italy, as well as in numerous galleries and museums across Europe.
Bouvard’s paintings reveal the influence of the artist Félix Ziem, whom he met during one of his many trips to Venice, and demonstrate his instinctive understanding of light, so characteristic of the city. His canvases depict the romantic and serene side of the city, and it was this sensitive portrayal of the City of the Doges that brought the artist fame.
Not only was he able to capture the bustle and charm of the Grand Canal, but he also managed to convey the atmosphere and serenity of the waters, the shimmer and the impressionistic reflections of the water flowing through the canals, all the variations of brown, ochre, white, and tan that make up the hues of the Venetian house facades.
His paintings demonstrate his architectural talent and also reflect his love for the unique lighting effects of Venice. Bouvard’s works are painted in an intimate style, successfully capturing all the charm of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. His popularity remains undiminished to this day, placing him among the most recognized and respected painters of Venetian subjects.
