Portica Mantel Clock, Circa 1800
A beautiful portico clock in white and black marble, richly decorated with chiseled and gilded bronze, featuring an urn with a pomegranate and chains at the top, two white marble pilasters topped with porcelain medallions painted with bouquets of flowers in gilded bronze frames adorned with ribbon bows and laurel leaves (one of which is cracked), decorated with garlands of flowers and foliage, friezes of pearls and spindles, and ending with lion’s paws and laurel wreaths against a black marble background; all set on a rectangular base adorned with gilded bronze bas-reliefs featuring acanthus leaves, flowers and foliage, supported by eight small circular pedestal feet (one garland of foliage re-gilded ).
The enameled dial, displaying the hours in Roman numerals, and the minutes in Arabic numerals, is set within a gilded bronze cylinder and framed by an openwork apron featuring drapery motifs adorned with flowers and foliage, held in place by two rods with pine-cones and decorated with foliage scrolls.
Movement in need of servicing, with a plate suspension.
