Oval Silver Box, Unhallmarked, With Floral Decoration And Gilded Highlights

A charming little oval silver box, unhallmarked, consisting of two interlocking parts, made in the late 19th century or very early 20th century.

As this small box bears no visible hallmarks, the two constituent parts were tested with a touchstone and reacted positively to the silver test, confirming that the metal is silver. The gilded parts were also tested with gold testing reagents (8 K, 14 K and 18 K) and showed no visible discolouration; this behaviour is consistent with the presence of a gold plating. The absence of hallmarks makes it impossible to attribute its origin with certainty. However, the quality of craftsmanship and its decorative style suggest it was produced in the late 19th or early 20th century.

It features an elegant floral design achieved by embossing: the lid is centred on a blooming flower surrounded by foliage and flower buds. The sides are punctuated by alternating panels adorned with plant motifs in slight relief and finely dotted panels, giving the piece as a whole a balanced and refined decoration.
The flowers feature gold highlights. Visual observations and tests carried out are consistent with selective gilding on silver (vermeil), creating a delicate contrast with the silvery background.
Given its small size, this box may have been intended to hold small pills, tablets, a piece of jewellery or any other small, precious pocket item.

An interesting example of small utilitarian silverwork from the Belle Époque, combining fine craftsmanship with decorative elegance.

Condition: in good condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age.
