The top of the lid features an exceptional figurative decoration: Eve in the Garden of Eden, holding the apple in front of the serpent. The high relief, almost sculptural treatment demonstrates true expertise in the art of embossed leather.
The four sides of the box are enlivened by rich naturalistic decoration: apples, foliage and an abundance of small creatures (dragonflies, spiders, chameleons, flies, snails, bees, salamanders, etc.) integrated into a dense and lively composition.
The four feet on which the box rests are also covered with the same worked leather.
On the front is a signature that is difficult to decipher, inscribed directly into the leather.
The workmanship of this chest is similar to that of the box by Pierre WAIDMANN (1860-1937) sold by the Audap auction house at the Hôtel Drouot on 26/06/25.
