Born in Valenciennes, Jean-Baptiste Pater (1695–1736) was a student of Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) in Paris.
Pater’s significant commercial success led him to establish a high-volume studio whose work focused almost exclusively on galant scenes.
Our painting is a perfect example of this 18th-century style and allows us to appreciate the atmosphere of frivolity that prevailed in aristocratic circles.
