Eugène-ernest Hillemacher, "the Distinguished Student With The Red Trim"

Artist: Eugène-ernest Hillemacher
Eugène-Ernest Hillemacher. Charcoal drawing, highlighted with white and red using chalk or pastel, “The Noble Student with Red Trim,” signed and dated in the middle right: E. Hillemacher 1876. 23 x 16.8 cm. French School.
Eugène-Ernest Hillemacher (1818–1887) was a student of Léon Cogniet (1794–1880) at the École des Beaux-Arts beginning in 1838. He began exhibiting at the Salon as early as 1840 with historical paintings, portraits, and genre paintings. It was the latter that earned him public acclaim. Museums in Auch, Besançon, Brest, Château-Thierry, Compiègne, Dijon, Montpellier, and Rouen in France, as well as in Melbourne, Australia, hold works by him (Sources: Bénézit Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors).
How many painters are capable, in their time, of probing the soul of their subject and, with a few strokes of the pencil, bringing it to life on a sheet of paper, to the great delight of 21st-century art lovers!
Period wooden frame with a patinated finish. The sheet shows slight foxing, which attests to the age of the paper without impairing the legibility of the lines. Good condition.
480 euros.
