In 1871, the artist visited Dutch museums and made numerous copies of Rembrandt (1606-1669) and Frans Hals (1580-1666). Roybet painted a significant number of costumed portraits: musketeers, lords, and mercenaries, executed with undeniable virtuosity (source: Bénézit Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors).
