Louis Stanislas Faivre-Duffer (1818-1897) was a French painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and then Paris. He stayed in Italy in 1846, where he was influenced by the Italian primitives. He distinguished himself primarily in society portraits, for which he acquired a solid reputation during the Second Empire, but also in genre scenes and the execution of large-scale decorative projects. He notably participated in the paintings of the Château d'Anet and the Chapel of the Eucharist at Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, but his most important project was the Chapel of Saint Joseph in the Church of Saint-Laurent in Paris, for which he designed the entire decoration and whose preparatory sketches are preserved at the Petit Palais. He exhibited several times at the Salons of Lyon and Paris and also participated in the Universal Exhibition of 1855.
