Miniature By Adriaen Brouwer, 17th Century, "the Tavern Drinker," Wood Panel
Artist: Adriaen Brouwer
This miniature portrait depicts a tavern drinker, typical of the 17th century. Regarding the artist, we found a name written in pencil on the back: "Brouwer". We cannot be certain who the painter is, as the painting is unsigned; however, after searching on sites such as Artprice, the style strongly suggests Adriaen Brouwer. We are not discussing attribution, nor are we definitively identifying the painter. Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638) was a painter and draughtsman from the Southern Netherlands specializing in genre scenes. Brouwer primarily painted tavern and tobacco-shop scenes, bringing a decisive renewal to genre painting based on older examples of Brueghelian rusticity, but with an incomparable technical refinement that elevates these Flemish "roughings" to truly dramatic and moving masterpieces. The frame features attractive gilding. We note some rubbing and scratches, craquelure, and small white spots; however, the work remains in generally acceptable condition. There is wear to the gilding and some small losses on the frame. For condition details, please examine the photos carefully. Feel free to zoom in. The photos are an integral part of the description.
