"Orientalist School "gentleman Dressed In Oriental Style""
Orientalist School. Oil on canvas mounted on panel, "Gentleman Dressed in Oriental Style," unsigned. 32 x 24 cm (sight size) (42.5 x 34.5 cm overall). Our painting dates from the mid-19th century. An oriental turban elegantly adorns a young man who has the air of a Western explorer. Is this René Caillet preparing to visit Timbuktu, thus braving all the dangers promised to the unbeliever that he is, or is it an English aristocrat about to explore the labyrinth of the great pyramids? We lean towards a young Briton whom Frederick Leighton (1830-1896) might have portrayed in this way. And why not, perhaps the master himself, who would have depicted himself thus while exploring the ruins of the Temple of Philae during his journey from London (United Kingdom) to Aswan (Egypt), having passed through Constantinople (Ottoman Empire), and on his way to Algiers (Algeria). Rosewood frame with lemonwood inlay. Good condition. 1200 euros
