A Scene Of Witchcraft And Magic. Pietro Dandini Attributed To
Artist: Pietro Dandini Attribué à
Scene of witchcraft and magic. Pietro Dandini attributed to. Oil on slate "madness beyond the magic circle" unsigned. 20 X 15 cm. Italian school.
Pietro Dandini (1646-1712) was trained by his father Vincenzo (1607-1675) in the art of Pietro da Cortona (1596-1669) known in France as Pierre de Cortone.
Born in Florence, Dandini also studied in Venice, Bologna, Modena and Rome. Back in Florence, he was the protégé of Grand Duke Como III (1642-1723), for whom he executed several works, excelling in domes as much as altars (sources: Bénézit dictionnaire des peintres et sculpteurs).
Our painting proposes a theme linked to magic and the bizarre, where alchemy rubs shoulders with the most monstrous creatures.
At the time, a current of curiosity about the occult was sweeping through the Italian courts, and it was only natural for a painter of Dandini's quality to join in, translating with his brush the tensions between nascent science and persistent superstition. Wooden frame decorated with pastiglia and gilding from the 17th century. Good condition.
6800 euros.
