Charlotte Augusta Howard, Age 13, Ivory Miniature By Emma Eleonora Kendrick (british 1788–1871)
Artist: Emma Eleonora Kendrick
Portrait of a child of noble descent, as indicated by the original inscription on the reverse: “Charlotte Augusta Howard, age 13.” This delicate ivory miniature was painted in 1831 by Emma Eleonora Kendrick (1788–1871), a British artist renowned for her miniatures and watercolors.
As a court painter to King George IV and his daughter, Princess Elizabeth I, she was appointed “Ordinary Miniature Painter to the King.” Based in London, she was a member of the New Water-Colour Society and the Society of British Artists. She exhibited her works from 1811 to 1840 at the Royal Academy and the Water-Colour Society (1815–1820). She created miniature portraits of the royal family and London’s high society, as well as watercolors depicting classical, mythological, and literary subjects (Psyche; Cleopatra; scenes from Byron and Walter Scott). Toward the end of her life, she taught miniature painting to the daughters of noble families. Her manual, titled *Conversations on the Art of Miniature Painting*, published in 1830, remains a valuable resource for specialized researchers despite its concise format.
