The monumental religious painting "Mary in Adoration with the Sleeping Infant Jesus" was executed in 1848 by the Austrian painter Josef Hölzl (1808 Merano - 1891 Wilten) after the famous painting of the same title by the Italian painter Guido Reni (1575-1642).
Reni's original (93 x 102 cm, oval in cross-section) is in Rome, Galleria Doria Pamphilj, a variant of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
The artist Josef Hölzl studied at the Draeind school of J. Pirchstaller and under Riesbacher in Merano. From 1833 to 1838, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He worked in Lana, from 1840 in Innsbruck, and occasionally in Bavaria and Switzerland, and finally in Wilten. He primarily created portraits and also painted religious subjects.
