White Porcelain Vase. Korea, Joseon (choson) Period, 19th Century
Artist: Gwangju
Rare Korean vase, made of white porcelain, wheel-thrown. It has an elegant, typically Korean neck bearing traces of the wheel-throwing process. The base is almost entirely covered with grains of kiln sand, fused in place by firing. There are many known examples of this model, but none possess its perfect proportions—height, width, curves, flaring—everything is in harmony and of rare elegance. Furthermore, the potter thinned the walls of this vase to the very limit of the clay’s capabilities in order to give his work the lightness that its aesthetic demanded.
