Large Ottoman Islamic Embroidered Silk Hanging – Sultan Mahmud II Period
Large Ottoman green velvet hanging, richly embroidered with metallic threads. Dedicated to Bab al-Salam ("Gate of Peace"), one of the gates of the Great Mosque of Mecca, it bears the imperial tughra of Sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808–1839), executed in elegant Divani calligraphy, together with numerous Quranic inscriptions. A remarkable example of 19th-century Ottoman textile art.
