Persian Asparagus Stand In Solid Silver, Qajar Period, Late 19th Century
Persian Aspergillum in Solid Silver, Qajar Period, Late 19th Century. Description: An elegant aspergillum of Persian origin, crafted in solid silver, dating from the late 19th century, and typical of Qajar period production. This piece is distinguished by the fineness and density of its engraved decoration, composed of scrolls and arabesques characteristic of Iranian silversmithing of this era. The aspergillum features an elaborate functional design: the upper part, corresponding to the last third of the object, is removable, allowing the reservoir to be filled. This system conforms to traditional Persian models intended to hold perfumed waters, primarily rosewater. In courtly and reception settings, the aspergillum was used to delicately sprinkle guests, as well as their hands, in a gesture of hospitality and symbolic purification, akin to a perfumed washing, before or after the meal. Although unhallmarked—a common occurrence for Persian pieces of this period—the item is made of solid silver, tested and guaranteed in our workshop. The piece demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship and a refined ceremonial use, emblematic of Qajar culture.
