Large Islamic Vase, 53 Cm High, Near East, In Brass Chased With Calligraphy, 19th Century
Important, large Islamic brass vase, 53 cm high.
It is decorated across its entire body with calligraphy, braids, trellises, mandorlas, and medallions, all hand-engraved with a burin. The finesse and quality of the chasing demonstrate the dexterity of the engraver of this 19th-century piece.
Originating from the Near East, it has an inverted chalice-shaped base supporting a bulbous body, surmounted by a long, ringed neck that also terminates in a chalice.
The body is exquisitely crafted with interlacing patterns, evoking the idea of a labyrinth, and numerous epigraphic decorations fill the spaces, including complex Arabic knots.
Many friezes of braids separate the larger decorative elements.
A true masterpiece of Islamic art!
These magnificent copper and brass pieces were, under the Muslim dynasties, a prominent alternative to silver and enjoyed the same status.
