Large Japanese Dish Made Of Gilded Metal, Meiji Period (1868–1912), Late 19th Century

A rare and elegant decorative Japanese dish from the Meiji period, crafted from finely worked pewter, with a bronze decoration in high relief, enhanced with gilding on the back.

The central medallion depicts a samurai on horseback, galloping across a battlefield, clad in his traditional armor and brandishing his sword. The relief, featuring high-quality chiseling, stands out against a gilded background that highlights the vigor of the scene.

The wing, with scalloped edges, is adorned with a series of panels finely engraved with floral and geometric motifs inspired by the Japanese decorative tradition, creating a refined contrast between the patinated surfaces and the gilded sections.

The reverse features a design in slight relief depicting a horseman, created using the repoussé technique, attesting to the care taken in the execution of this piece.
