"kiss Of Peace" In Bronze, 16th Century, Italy. St. Anne.
An interesting Italian “kiss of peace” painting from the 16th century. It depicts St. Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, visiting her daughter and her son, the Infant Jesus—a rather rare depiction of the saint, who is often shown teaching Mary to read.
The columns on either side, the arabesques flanking the columns, and the clouds are characteristic of 16th-century Italian art. The Child, sitting on His Mother’s lap, is waving His arms. The sculpture is in high relief, worn on the faces,
but highly detailed in the clothing. A small pin was added later to hold a candle. This pin has been partially cut off. The handle on the back has disappeared over time.
Beautiful 16th-century Italian work.
