Gilt Bronze Plaque, Two Allegorical Figures Framing A World Map And Various Symbols. 18th Century.
A beautiful gilt bronze plaque depicting two young women on either side, both seated on clouds. The one on the left holds a cornucopia and wears a laurel wreath. The other has curly hair that falls over her left shoulder. She holds what appears to be a book in her lap. At her feet is a bust of an emperor. Between them, on the ground, lies a globe resting on a palm frond (perhaps a victor's palm?). A crown and a painter's palette are also present. Both women extend their arms at shoulder height, their hands flat, as if supporting something. Four small holes are present at the base. Is this an ornamental bronze? Late 18th century, perhaps earlier. France.
