Adolf Werner Gotthar : "on The Banks Of The Nile"
GottharAdolf Werner (1837–1903) : “On the Banks of the Nile,” oil on canvas, 75× 125 cm, mounted in a carved and gilded wooden frame, 90 × 138 cm (signs of wear and restored gilding).
Signed and dated 1883 on the back.
This large painting is not only powerfully decorative; it is also a page of history and insight into life in Egypt at the end of the 19th century, when the country was both an Ottoman possession and under a strong British “protectorate.”
A boat steered by a ferryman is preparing to cross one of the countless waterways of the delta, while another group waits its turn, looking across to the oppositebank, British soldiers (nicknamed the “Red Coats” or “Lobsters”) march past, a scout in front driving sheep with the tip of his bayonetinto the river, a mehari on his camel waiting for them to finish.
The Swedish artist has captured the characters’ various poses with great vitality and tenderness.
