GastonLarrieu (1908–1983) : “Chapelle de Gourby in Rivière in the Landes,” oil on canvas, 38 x 46 cm, mounted in a gilded Parnassian frame with a repainted border, 54 x 62 cm.
Countersigned, located, and dated “58” on the back.
The famous chronicler of the Landes region also drew inspiration from his travels, whetherin Spain and Italy or in Brittany, sometimes venturing as far as the neighboring Basque Country, but it was to his native region that he devoted the bulk of his workin a style characterized by sharp brushwork and a warm color palette, as seen in ourpainting, where the “Utrillo-esque” whites bring out the richness of the browntiles and the deep greens of the pine trees.
This charming little 13th-century chapel is dedicated to Saint Blaise.
