Large Wedding Chest From Rajasthan, Wooden Trunk On Four Wheels, Iron, India. Asia, 19th Century
Large Indian chest made of exotic wood, adorned with extensive wrought iron and ironwork.
The top is domed and opens two-thirds of the way via two wrought-iron hinges, revealing a large storage space traditionally used for linens, and a crosswise compartment in the upper left section.
The front is entirely covered with embossed sheet metal featuring a grid pattern and adorned with rosettes.
The two sides, the back, and the lid are covered with rounded iron strips.
The entire piece rests on four wooden casters and is also equipped with two wrought-iron side handles.
It is secured by a hasp and a chiseled iron buckle.
This superb chest dates from the late 19th century to the very early 20th century and originates from the Rajasthan region in northwestern India.
Chests of this type were often given by families as a dowry for a wedding.
Handcrafted, this chest has slight variations in its proportions, particularly at the back (see last photo), which lends it a great deal of authenticity.
Waxed finish; note signs of wear due to use and age.
