Oil on canvas mounted on board by one of the leading figures of French Orientalist painting: Henri PONTOY.
This renowned artist was born in Reims in 1888 and died in Six-Four-les-Plages in 1968.
He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Luc Olivier Merson’s studio and exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Artistes Français, and the Salon des Artistes Orientalistes Algériens.
In 1926, he received a travel grant from the Colonial Society of French Artists.
In the 1930s, he lived in Ouarzazate, where he met Jacques Majorelle.
This scene, depicting three women in the foreground drawing water from the riverbank, is a recurring motif in PONTOY’s work.
The brushwork is Impressionist, and the subtle palette of warm colors perfectly captures the light of the Mediterranean countries.
This scene is not geographically specified, but it could depict the banks of the Nile, as PONTOY had previously painted similar scenes in Egypt.
