The son of a merchant, François Michel Capelle, and Rose Émilie Frontin, Eugène Alfred Capelle was born on October 18, 1834, in Rouen .

In 1862, he exhibited a series of notable pastoral paintings depicting oxen in his hometown .
Capelle exhibited for the first time at the 1863 Paris Salon; he was living in Mortefontaine (Oise).
In the early 1860s, he met the young Laurent Bouvier, a painter and future ceramic artist, who regarded Capelle as his mentor .
He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1864 to 1870, producing mainly paintings of Normandy landscapes and views of the banks of the Marne.
Starting in 1865, he lived in Chennevières-sur-Marne, and his Parisian gallery was Deforge & Carpentier, located at 8 Boulevard Montmartre.
He began working with Charles-Théodore Sauvageot (1826–1883) and the architect Vaudremer, creating the frescoes for the Church of Saint-Pierre-de-Montrouge.
