Painter Alfred, known as Fred Tinsel, was born on April 15, 1920 in Metz (Moselle), son of Edouard Arno Tinsel, a locomotive engineer, and Carole Wolff, from Betschdorf, the village where he grew up. He died on March 11, 1989 in Strasbourg. He was a student at the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts from 1935 to 1938, where he attended classes with professors Louis Philippe Kamm, Emile Schneider, Auguste Cammissar, and the sculptor Albert Schultz. At the end of the Second World War, he set up his studio in the "Octroi" pavilion opposite the Orangerie and worked there until 1966.
