Reliquary Figure, Byeri Fang Ntumu, Gabon
Fang statue from Gabon; this is a Byeri, one of the guardians of Fang reliquaries . It is in the style known as n'tumu, recognizable by its long, cylindrical torso, a pouty, duck-billed mouth, and short, muscular, stocky arms and legs, with thighs featuring geometric facets, and a beautiful mirror-like patina resulting from regular applications of palm oil. Height 56 cm, in good overall condition, with a few signs of impact and wear... Note the notch at the rear foot, which was used to keep thestatue securely anchored to the reliquary basket.
