In the mid-20th century, Accolay was the setting for a true revolution in ceramics. Four former students of Alexandre Kostanda settled in the small village in the Yonne region in the mid-1940s; many potters would follow their example. For some forty years, the work of Accolay’s potters was impressive, original, and daring, characterized by thick, often speckled glazes and boundless creativity.
For more than 20 years, a style of pottery flourished in Accolay that combined a diversity of objects—masks, jewelry, toys, and more—with a variety of materials—ceramics, glass, plant fibers… all while blending aesthetic appeal with “Zazou” humor.
