Accolay Potters: Large Pinched-ceramic Vase In A Brutalist Style, Vintage 1960s
This lovely, large vase with original shapes, generously rounded and pinch-formed on one side, was produced by the potters of Accolay. The ceramic is decorated with vibrant colors in an art brut style, on a speckled ochre background ((yellow, ochre, blue)
Decorative, intriguing, and beautifully shaped, it is a stunning piece that bridges the gap between art brut and ethnic craftsmanship
The vase is exquisitely crafted. The glaze is nuanced, thick, and mineral-like. The vase is in excellent condition; the decoration varies from side to side. The ceramic is signed on the reverse with a stylus.

In the mid-20th century, Accolay was the setting for a true revolution in the field of ceramics. Four former students of Alexandre Kostanda settled in the small village in the Yonne region in the mid-1940s, and many potters followed their example. For some forty years, the work of Accolay’s potters was impressive, original, and daring, characterized by thick, often speckled glazes and boundless creativity.
