Carved Stone Capital. Italy, 16th-17th Century.
Carved stone capital. Italy, 16th-17th century.
30 x 25 x h 25 cm.
Entirely carved in stone, some breaks and losses.
The lawful provenance of the object has been verified and confirmed by the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Udine (document enclosed).
Stone capital carved fully in the round, of inverted truncated-conical form. The surface is decorated at the corners with rolled volutes and, along the sides, with relief decoration now partially legible due to prolonged exposure to the elements. On the top is a hole, made at a later date, likely intended to hold the shaft of a cross or a standard. The piece, attributable to Italian architectural production between the 16th and 17th centuries, retains a clear sculptural quality despite the abrasions and minor losses caused by time. Originally conceived as an architectural support element, it lends itself today to evocative reuse as a base, pedestal, or decorative object of strong antiquarian character.
