Virgin And Child In Soft Limestone – Eastern France, 15th Century
A touching sculpture in the round depicting the Virgin and Child, carved from soft limestone, 15th century.
The Virgin is depicted standing, crowned, with a serene expression marked by the solemnity characteristic of works from this region. She holds the Infant Jesus in her left arm. The drapery is rendered with great artistry: the cloak forms an elegant apron over the front of the dress and falls in folds.
The delicate traces of blue and red that remain suggest the richness of the original polychromy and contribute to the sculpture’s sense of vitality.
The work is fully in keeping with the stylistic tradition of the workshops of northeastern France, on the border between the Champagne region and Lorraine, as evidenced by the choice of stone.
In good condition, this sculpture shows signs of previous restoration work and a few small chips and missing pieces visible at the base and along the edges of the drapery.
The child’s head was broken in two and restored
