Florentine Bust Made Of Carrara Marble

An important and very rare white Carrara marble bust, signed and dated on the back "Professor Ulisse Cambi 1858".
Ulisse Cambi, son of the sculptor Pietro Cambi, attended the art school and the academy in Florence before continuing his studies in Rome starting in 1833, where he spent four years.
Upon returning to Florence after an initial difficult period, he succeeded in establishing himself in the local art scene and was appointed professor at the academy, where he taught sculpture.
Among the various artists trained at his school, we can mention the Sienese sculptor Giovanni Dupré and Giorgio Ceragioli, who worked primarily in Piedmont.
Starting in the 1840s, Cambi created important works such as the statues of Benvenuto Cellini and Carlo Goldini (both in Florence) and the fountain in Piazza Duomo in Prato.
In particular, some of his funerary monuments were highly acclaimed, such as the one dedicated to the painter Giuseppe Sabatelli (Florence, Church of Santa Croce).
With the prevalence of the Verismo movement, his classicism alienated him from critics and patrons.
He died in Florence in 1895.
